FAQ

Q: What is Yoga?

A: YOGA is an ancient system of integration. The word itself means to UNITE. Any person in his or her own way, much like an art form, can practice it with amazing life results. YOGA is a mind/body/spirit discipline.

For the BODY, YOGA can be a workout, to free oneself from physical tensions and create strength, resilience and stability while for the MIND, a way to work-in, to free oneself from internal obstacles and create the clarity necessary for inner strength, resilience, and stability. The result is a happy SPIRIT, able to glide through life's twists and turns with ease and confidant, inspired, inner guidance.

Q: Do I need to be flexible to practice yoga?

A: This is the best reason to begin as; yoga does help increase your flexibility. Start now!

Q. The magazines show really complicated positions -is that the goal, it looks discouraging.

A. The goal of Yoga practices is to tame the mind.

Sutra 1. 2-yogash citta-vrtti-nirodah Yoga occurs when the field of consciousness is liberated from its patterned spinning's. Then the mind rests in clarified stillness devoid of any conditioned bias.

These postures are not the essence of the practice. It is not about touching your toes, the postures are designed to decongest the body, they are practiced with sustained attention to one's breath, and a devotional aspect that allows the individual to cultivate their spiritual center.

Q: What style of Yoga do you teach?

A. I always say I gear the practice to the student and encourage understanding of the eight limbs of Yoga practice and the integration of what you learn into practical methods for dealing with daily life. Classic Yoga - a flowing practice of postures linked through breathing practices, relaxation and meditative awareness, cleansing techniques and concentration exercises are typically taught as well as tools the individual can use to manage their stress and cope with challenges.

Q. Eight limbs?

A. The core of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra is an eight-limbed (ashtanga) path that forms the structural framework of yoga. Upon practicing all eight limbs of the path it becomes clearer that no one element is elevated over another in a hierarchical order. Each is part of a holistic focus, which eventually brings a sense of wholeness to the individual as they find their connectivity to the divine.

In brief the eight limbs, or steps to yoga, are as follows:
Yama: Universal morality
Niyama: Personal observances
Asana: Body postures
Pranayama: Breathing exercises, and control of prana
Pratyahara: Control of the senses
Dharana: Concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness
Dhyana: Devotion, Meditation on the Divine
Samadhi: Union with the Divine
