Treating psychosomatic disorders
Have you ever said "Doing that was such a pain in the neck?" and then realized your neck was stiff and painful?
A psychosomatic disorder is described as a "condition in which psychological stresses adversely affect physiological (somatic) functioning to the point of distress" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). While there are medicinal methods of treating these disorders, there is also a great wisdom within the body that can be tapped to help with healing.
The body has its own internal pharmacy that needs to be allowed to work. The stresses and emotions that come up in daily life can overwhelm and thus impede the body's innate abilities to heal, aggravate existing illnesses and often result in maladaptive coping behaviours.
Both Yoga and Therapeutic Massage help one tap into the body's resources and amazing technology to facilitate the healing process. Optimal healing takes place during deep sleep, which yoga can simulate while awake. During Therapeutic Massage, the relaxation response is also stimulated. In this altered state of consciousness, when the mind is no longer in worry/anxiety mode, every cell of the body reconnects to its main computer, the brain, and the body can find its intuitive answers to what it needs and repair and heal itself with remarkable precision.
